Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

In recognition of the many relevant life experiences graduate students bring to their degree program, we approve several informal credit opportunities or prior learning assessments (PLAs), like leadership training (e.g., Leadership Frederick), significant/relevant career/industry experience, military background and/or a variety of certifications (e.g., CPA, PMP, NBC, LETRS).

To apply for prior learning credit, the student should submit the PLA form to view the options and the rubric for portfolio assessment (if applicable). Once the form is submitted, the program director will review the application in 7-10 business days and may require additional documentation for the review. In consultation with the graduate dean and registrar, the program director evaluates PLAs for applicability to graduate degree requirements at Hood College. For credit-bearing experiences, the transfer is generally awarded for courses that are clearly applicable to a graduate degree and for which the student earned a grade of B or above. A maximum of 6 credits may be awarded, but additional credits may be approved on a case-by-case basis by the program director and graduate dean.

A student who wishes to appeal transfer credit equivalencies should notify the Office of the Registrar with the request as soon as possible after initial credit has been awarded. The Office of the Registrar will work with the student and relevant program director to re-evaluate credits and may request valid certifications and/or additional documentation as needed.

Graduate Program PLA policies fall into one of two categories:

  1. The program does not accept prior learning due to accreditation or other disciplinary restrictions.
  2. The program accepts prior learning for one or more designated courses based on one or more of the following methods:
  •  the successful review of a portfolio showcasing the requisite experience
  •  the successful completion of a challenge exam with an 82% score or higher
  •  evidence of alternative experiences that satisfy the requirements of one or more courses (e.g., non-degree programs, badges, bootcamps or certificates)
